Commander Kelly Williamson, Director of Navy Public Affairs, Royal Canadian Navy
Commander (Cdr) Kelly Williamson joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1996 as a Maritime Surface Warfare Officer (MARS) and attended the Royal Military College of Canada, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Military and Strategic Studies in May 2000. She proceeded to the School of Journalism and Communications at Carleton University as a Security and Defence Forum Scholar, obtaining a Master of Arts in Communications in 2002.
In April 2007, she was posted ashore and served as Flag Lieutenant to Commander Maritime Forces Pacific until she became a Public Affairs Officer in January 2009. After completing her public affairs training in June 2009, Williamson was posted to Canadian Expeditionary Forces Command (CEFCOM) in Ottawa where she initially served as the Media Relations Officer. During this period, Williamson supported the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) and deployed to Port au Prince, Haiti, on Operation HESTIA from January until March 2010. Upon completion of Op HESTIA, Williamson returned to CEFCOM, and became the PA Desk Officer for South West Asia. Here she managed a number of challenging issues related to Operation ATHENA and provided training, support and guidance to deployed PA teams. In March 2011, Williamson deployed for a short tour to Southern Afghanistan.
Williamson served as the Executive Assistant to Director General International Security Policy at National Defence Headquarters and as the SPAO for the DART, deploying to Kathmandu Nepal from April to June 2015. Williamson served as Deputy Director of the Combined Information Bureau in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for Rim of the Pacific 2016, the world’s largest maritime exercise. She served as Senior Public Affairs Officer with Maritime Forces Atlantic and for the 5th Canadian Division, the Canadian Army in Atlantic Canada and was promoted to her present rank in March 2018. She is now the Director of Navy Public Affairs in Ottawa and is passionate about Communicating with Canadians and incorporating gender perspectives into military and operational planning. She also an advocate and volunteer with Veterans Emergency Transition Services Canada.
